You Have Stood At A Counter With Your Whole Bag Tipped Out. People Waiting Behind You. Looking For A Card You Knew Was In There.

You blamed yourself. So did I, for thirty years, and I am the one who makes the bags. Then my mother showed me what was actually wrong, and it was neither of us. It takes four seconds to check, on the bag you are holding right now.

A woman at a supermarket checkout with the contents of her handbag spread across the counter

You have done this. Probably this week.

It is always the worst possible moment

The lift is full. The queue is four people long. The taxi is outside with the engine running.

That is exactly when your hand goes into your bag and finds nothing.

You know the card is in there. You put it there yourself. But your bag has one opening and your entire life goes through it, so the card is under the umbrella, under the tissue packet, under the plastic bag you kept because it was still good.

So you do what you always do. You hold it open with one hand and dig with the other. You turn your body slightly, away from the queue, so nobody can see in.

Then you tip it out. On the counter. On the car seat. On your own lap.

And behind you, somebody shifts their weight.

It is not the searching. It is what you think while you search.

Nobody says anything. That is the thing. Nobody has ever said anything.

But you are standing in front of strangers with your whole life spread across a counter, and there is a sentence in your head that has been there so long you do not hear it any more.

“Aiyoh. Why am I like this.”

You have thought that sentence at the checkout, in the lift lobby, in the car park, at the gate at Changi with your boarding pass somewhere in there. Four thousand times a year, give or take. For thirty years.

It costs you something every time. Not much. A little.

The contents of a handbag spread across a supermarket checkout counter

Your whole life, on a counter, in front of strangers.

Now think about the one time it went the other way

You reached in once. Your hand went straight to the place it always goes. Card. Out. Tapped. You did not look down and you did not stop talking to the person beside you.

Nothing else in your life was different that day.

You simply knew where one thing was, and for about four seconds you were a woman who has her life in order.

That is the whole feeling. It is not a big feeling. It is a very small one, fifteen times a day, and most women reading this have not had it since their children were small.

Here is the part that took me thirty years

You are not a disorganised woman.

Take the bag you are carrying right now. Open it. I will wait, it takes four seconds.

Count how many separate closed places there are to put something.

For almost every bag sold in Singapore the answer is one. One big space. Maybe a small zip pocket on the side that you have forgotten is there, because you forgot it was there in the first week.

Look at what you are holding and understand what you were asked to do with it. You were handed a bucket and told to keep it tidy.

A bucket cannot be tidy. There is nowhere for anything to go. Gravity does the sorting, and gravity puts your keys at the bottom under everything, every single time, no matter how careful you are.

You have been losing that fight since you were twenty-five and calling it a personal failing the entire time.

It was never you. It was the shape of the thing hanging on your shoulder.

Four words from a woman who made bags for forty years

My mother opened her workshop in 1961, above a coffee shop, up a narrow staircase that smelled of leather and kopi.

She never used the word design. She would take a bag, turn it over, press the bottom with her thumb and hand it back without saying anything. That was the review.

She said the whole thing in four words.

A bag is shelves.

Not a bucket. Shelves. A place for the two things you reach for fifteen times a day, a place for the things you need once, and a wall between them so the first two never end up underneath the rest.

I sat on the floor by her feet from the time I could sit, and it still took me until I was fifty-one to understand what she meant.

My mother, still at the bench. She gave me a needle when I was seven.

So that is how we build them now

Card and keys at the top, in their own closed pocket, at the height your hand already goes to. You will stop looking down within a week.

Phone in the second pocket, on the side, so it is never face down under a water bottle.

Cash in a pocket on the back panel, flat against your body, so you are not standing in a crowd with your bag hanging open.

Everything else below, in the main space, where it can sit without burying the things that matter.

Fifty-seven of the fifty-eight bags on this page are built that way. The one that is not is a small evening clutch, and a clutch does not need shelves.

You will notice it on the first morning. Not because the bag is beautiful, although it is. Because you reached in once.

Divider down the middle with two side pockets

Divider down the middle, two side pockets. You reach in once.

Three things my mother still checks. You can check them too.

She is seventy-nine and she still comes up the stairs. She checks three things and she has never once skipped them. Do them on your own bag while you are holding it.

Count the stitches along one inch of the seam. Ours are eight to the inch. Under six and the seam is holding the bag together on hope.

Run your thumb along the cut edge. Ours get three coats. If yours feels raw or fuzzy, that edge will fray inside a year.

Press the bottom with your thumb. If it folds, that bag will collapse the moment you set it down and everything will slide into one corner.

Three seconds each. You now know more about the bag on your shoulder than you did the day you bought it.

A thumb pressed against the base of a bag

The thumb on the bottom. Forty years and she has never once skipped it.

What you are probably thinking

I already have too many bags.

You have bags. You do not have shelves. That is a different thing, and it is the reason the bags you have are not working.

It is under fifty dollars. What is wrong with it.

Nothing is wrong with it. We do not have a shop, we do not have a name on a building in Orchard, and we do not pay anyone to put our bag in a magazine. You are paying for leather, hardware and eight stitches to the inch. The rest of the price you normally pay is rent.

What if it is not right.

Then send it back within 30 days and we refund it. You do not have to tell us why and you do not have to be polite about it. Keep it until you are sure. Use it, fill it, put it on the floor. That is the only way to know.

We make each design in small runs. That is the only way she can still put her thumb on every bottom before it leaves.

523 bags went out in the last two months.

Right now the whole collection is up to 80% off. Bags start at S$42.95.
